X (Twitter) Tests Paid Partnership Tags for In-Stream Creator Promotions
X (formerly Twitter) appears to be preparing a new feature that could make branded content easier and more transparent for creators and advertisers. Recent back-end testing suggests that X is developing paid partnership tags that would allow creators to clearly label sponsored content directly within the feed.
The feature was spotted by app researcher Nima Owji, who shared evidence showing new content tags designed specifically for paid promotions. If rolled out publicly, these tags would give creators a simple, built-in way to indicate a brand partnership—similar to tools already available on platforms like Instagram and TikTok.
Currently, X already has rules around paid promotions and disclosure. However, the process is largely manual. According to X’s guidelines, any organic post that includes a paid partnership must contain clear and visible language such as “Ad” or “Promoted Content.” Most creators comply by adding hashtags like #ad, but enforcement and consistency can vary.
Introducing an official paid partnership tag would simplify this process and improve transparency across the platform. It would also bring X more in line with industry standards, making it easier for brands to identify sponsored content and for users to understand when a post is promotional.
While the feature appears basic at this stage, it opens the door to future enhancements. Other social platforms provide brands with performance analytics, insights, and reporting tools tied directly to paid partnerships. Although these analytics are not currently visible in the leaked testing screenshots, X could expand the feature to include similar data access over time.
This update also fits into X’s broader push to attract and retain creators. The platform has recently increased its revenue-sharing payouts, introduced financial incentives for high-performing content, and promoted long-form articles as a way for creators to earn more and reach wider audiences. These efforts benefit creators, boost engagement on X, and generate additional data that can support xAI’s development.
While paid partnership tags may seem like a small update, they could play a meaningful role in X’s creator economy strategy. By streamlining branded collaborations and improving disclosure, X is signaling that it wants to become a more creator-friendly platform—one that supports monetization while maintaining transparency and trust.
